Updated October 2025
A few minutes from Chinatown, Central Market (Pasar Seni) is where I send anyone who wants Malaysia-in-a-mall-sized box: heritage crafts, batik, wau kites, pewter, woodcarving, textiles, snacks, plus an easy food court upstairs and the outdoor Kasturi Walk right next door. It started life in 1888 as a wet market; today it’s an Art Deco icon and a curated bazaar of Malaysian culture that’s actually fun to browse.

HOW TO GET THERE (ZERO-TRAFFIC VERSION)
Ride the MRT/LRT to Pasar Seni Station and take Entrance A (Jalan Sultan) you’ll pop out a short walk from the main entrance on Jalan Hang Kasturi. There’s also a paid-to-paid LRT↔MRT link inside the station, and bus hubs sit right by Central Market/Kasturi Walk if you’re coming on GoKL. If you’re at Petaling Street already, it’s a 3–5 minute stroll.

WHEN TO GO (AND HOW LONG TO STAY)
Most listings show daily ~10:00–21:30 (some quote 10:00–22:00). I plan 90 minutes to 2 hours if I’m shopping and eating; longer if I’m doing the Annexe upstairs or lingering on Kasturi Walk. If you hit rain (very possible), this is the perfect indoor Plan B.

GROUND FLOOR: WHAT TO BUY (AND HOW I NAVIGATE IT)
I enter by the Art Deco façade and work the hall by its cultural “streets”: Lorong Melayu, Straits Chinese, and Lorong India - lanes that echo KL’s heritage through the products you’ll see. This is where I pick up hand-drawn batik and songket, miniature wau (traditional kites), pewter pieces (Royal Selangor stockists and smaller ateliers), woodcarvings, congkak game boards, spices/snacks, and white coffee to take home. Prices range widely; browse, compare quality, and don’t be shy to ask about fabric weave, pewter grade, or whether a batik is hand-drawn vs. printed.

MEZZANINE / LEVEL 1: FOOD COURT + ANNEXE (RAIN-PROOF BREAK)
When my feet (or the sky) need a timeout, I head to the Central Market Food Court on the Mezzanine/upper floor for wallet-friendly Malaysian plates, rice sets, noodles, drinks, desserts. All without leaving the building. Right next door, in the Central Market Annexe, you’ll find small galleries and the Illusion 3D Art Museum (Level 2 of the Annexe), a family-friendly photo stop that runs 10:00–21:00 with last entry at 20:00. It’s an easy add if you’re traveling with kids/teens and want AC between shopping rounds.
KASTURI WALK: THE OUTDOOR STRIP NEXT DOOR
Step outside to Kasturi Walk, a covered pedestrian lane lined with kiosks selling street snacks, fruit, souvenirs, fashion, and the occasional pop-up performance under the giant wau (kite) arch. Think of it as the al fresco extension of Central Market, great for quick bites and people-watching before you duck back into the AC. Typical hours mirror the market (~10:00–21:30).

HOW I SHOP SMART
I start with a slow lap to get a feel for prices and workmanship, then circle back to the stalls that stuck with me. For batik, I ask whether pieces are tulis (hand-drawn) or cap (stamped) and look for the wax lines. For wau kites, miniature versions pack better in a suitcase; big showpieces are for walls, not flights. For pewter, I look for weight and finish and ask about brand provenance. Most vendors accept cash; an increasing number take e-wallet/QR, but cash still speeds things up. Many stalls are happy to negotiate gently, smiles help.

HISTORY NOTES
The site began as an open-air market before a permanent building went up in 1888. The current Art Deco buildingdates to 1937 and has been recognized as a cultural landmark; today it’s managed as a heritage shopping complex with 350+ stalls and themed lanes rather than a traditional wet market. That mix - old shell, curated contents - is why it works so well on a first visit.

PAIR IT WITH THE NEIGHBORHOOD (MY MINI-LOOP)
I usually pair Central Market with Petaling Street (Chinatown) for evening snacks, or slide to Kwai Chai Hong for murals at sunset. If I’m building a culture day, I add Sri Mahamariamman Temple before lunch and pop back later for a River of Life lap around Masjid Jamek at 9 pm. Everything is walkable or one quick train stop away.
