Why This Iconic Beach Is a Must Visit When in Krabi
Railay Beach is one of those places that immediately reminds you why people fall in love with Thailand. Dramatic limestone cliffs, soft sand, turquoise water, and a laid back island feel, all wrapped into a place that is surprisingly easy to visit.
Railay Beach is not an island, but it feels like one. It is completely cut off from the mainland by cliffs, which means the only way to reach it is by boat. That separation is part of what makes it feel special.
When we visited, it was absolutely beautiful and one of the highlights of our time in Krabi.

How to Get to Railay Beach
The only way to get to Railay Beach is by boat. There are no roads that connect it to the mainland due to the surrounding limestone cliffs.
Most visitors arrive by longtail boat from the Ao Nang area.
Ao Nang is the most common departure point and the easiest place to arrange transport.

Buying Longtail Boat Tickets to Railay Beach
Tickets can be purchased at one of the two official kiosks located on opposite ends of Ao Nang Beach. These kiosks are easy to spot and are set up specifically for longtail boat transfers.
Ticket price
• One way ticket: 100 THB per person
Boat operating hours
• 8:00 am to 6:00 pm
According to the posted price list, it is possible to return later than 6:00 pm, but the price typically increases to 150 THB per person for late evening trips.
You can also buy a return ticket before leaving Ao Nang if you prefer to have everything arranged in advance.

Our Route to Railay Beach
From our hotel in Ao Nang, we walked toward Phra Nang and then curved around toward Ao Nam Mao Pier.

From there, we bought tickets and took a longtail boat across. The ride itself is short, scenic, and part of the experience. You glide past towering cliffs and clear water, and before you know it, you are stepping onto Railay.

What Railay Beach Feels Like When You Arrive
Railay immediately feels different from Ao Nang.
The cliffs rise straight up around the beach, creating a sense of enclosure and calm. The pace slows. Shoes come off. People linger.
There is a relaxed, barefoot energy here that makes it easy to spend more time than planned.

The Different Areas of Railay Beach
Railay is made up of a few key areas that are easy to explore on foot.
Railay West
This is the main arrival beach and the most famous stretch of sand. It is wide, scenic, and perfect for swimming, relaxing, and watching boats come and go.

Railay East
Railay East is more mangrove lined and is where many accommodations are located. It is quieter and has a more local feel.
Phra Nang Beach
Phra Nang is often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. It has stunning cliffs, soft sand, and shallow water. It feels slightly more tucked away and is absolutely worth the walk.

Walking Between Railay Beaches
One of the best parts of Railay is how walkable it is.
There is a walking path that connects Railay West, Railay East, and Phra Nang Beach, which allows you to explore the entire area without needing another boat ride.
During low tide, you can also take a path that leads through rocks protruding from the water. This adds a bit of adventure and gives you different views of the coastline.
Walking between beaches is easy, scenic, and part of the Railay experience.

Food and Restaurants at Railay Beach
On Walking Street at Railay Beach, you will find plenty of restaurants, cafes, and small shops.
The prices are surprisingly affordable considering how beautiful and popular the area is.
You will find:
• Thai food
• seafood
• Western dishes
• smoothies and fresh juices
It is easy to stop for lunch, have a drink, and linger without feeling rushed.

How Long to Spend at Railay Beach
Railay Beach works well as:
• a half day trip
• a full day trip
• an overnight stay
Many visitors come for the day and leave feeling like they wish they had stayed longer.
If you have time, staying overnight lets you experience Railay once the day trippers leave, which gives it an entirely different feel.

Best Time to Visit Railay Beach
Morning is calmer and cooler. Midday brings more visitors and brighter light. Late afternoon offers softer light and a relaxed vibe.
Tide levels can affect how the beach looks and how easy certain paths are, so flexibility helps.

Why Railay Beach Is Worth the Trip
Railay Beach is not just another pretty beach. It is a place where geography creates atmosphere.
The cliffs, the boat-only access, the walkable paths, and the relaxed energy all come together to make it feel special.
It is one of those places that lives up to the photos and then adds something extra you did not expect.
