Phuket is known for its beaches, but some of the most memorable experiences on the island happen above the coastline.

Because Phuket is a mountainous island, several scenic viewpoints overlook the Andaman Sea, offering panoramic views of beaches, cliffs, and tropical hillsides. These viewpoints are scattered around the island and are often included in island tours or scenic drives.

Many of them are free to visit and only require a short stop, making them an easy addition to a day exploring the island.

Some viewpoints are famous for sunset, others for sweeping coastal views, and some offer quiet spots away from the busy beaches.

Why Phuket Viewpoints Are Worth Visiting

Phuket’s landscape is diverse. Hills rise sharply from the coast, bays curve into the island, and viewpoints often reveal multiple beaches or islands at once.

Viewpoints are ideal if you:
• want incredible photos
• prefer cooler breezes
• want to understand the island’s layout
• need a break from beach crowds

Most viewpoints are free and accessible, making them easy additions to any itinerary.

Karon Viewpoint

One of the most famous viewpoints on the island is Karon Viewpoint, sometimes called the “Three Beaches Viewpoint.”

From this lookout you can see three of Phuket’s west coast beaches lined up along the shoreline: Kata Noi, Kata, and Karon Beach.

The viewpoint sits on a hill along the coastal road between Kata and Nai Harn Beach and is one of the most photographed locations in Phuket.

Visitors usually stop here for photos and panoramic views of the Andaman Sea before continuing to nearby beaches or attractions.

If you want a deeper guide to this location, see my Karon Viewpoint Phuket guide.

What you will see

This viewpoint offers a classic three-bay view of:
• Kata Noi Beach
• Kata Beach
• Karon Beach

On clear days, the water shifts between shades of turquoise and deep blue, framed by green hills.

Why it is worth visiting

• paved access
• parking available
• no hiking required
• great for quick stops

This is one of the best viewpoints if you want dramatic scenery without effort.

Promthep Cape

Promthep Cape is another famous scenic viewpoint and is known as one of the best sunset spots on the island.

Located at the southern tip of Phuket, the cape offers dramatic views of the Andaman Sea and rugged coastal cliffs. Many visitors gather here in the evening to watch the sunset over the ocean.

Because of its popularity, the viewpoint can become crowded at sunset, but the scenery makes it worth the visit.

Promthep Cape is often included on island sightseeing routes along with beaches and viewpoints across southern Phuket.

What you will see

Cliffs drop sharply into the sea, with expansive views over the Andaman coastline. The terrain feels rugged and natural.

Best time to visit

Late afternoon is popular, but earlier visits are calmer and cooler. While many come for sunset, the viewpoint is impressive at any time of day.

Things to know

• short walk from parking
• can be crowded near sunset
• vendors often sell snacks and drinks

Windmill Viewpoint

Windmill Viewpoint is one of the quieter scenic spots on the island.

Overlooking Nai Harn Beach and Ya Nui Beach, this viewpoint features a large white wind turbine and offers beautiful coastal views.

Compared to some of Phuket’s more famous viewpoints, Windmill Viewpoint tends to be less crowded, making it a good place to relax while watching the sunset.

What makes it special

The view looks out over Nai Harn Bay with fewer crowds. The setting feels peaceful and less commercial.

Why visit

• quieter atmosphere
• good for photos
• close to Nai Harn Beach

This is a great spot if you want scenery without the crowds.

Rang Hill Viewpoint

Rang Hill Viewpoint overlooks Phuket Town and offers a different perspective from coastal viewpoints.

What you will see

• cityscape views
• green hills
• occasional monkey sightings

This viewpoint is especially nice in the late afternoon when the light softens over the town.

Who it is best for

• people staying near Phuket Town
• those wanting a city and nature blend

Khao Rang Viewpoint

Khao Rang is closely associated with Rang Hill and is another popular viewpoint near Phuket Town.

Why include it

It is less about dramatic cliffs and more about enjoying a peaceful elevated view.

Black Rock Viewpoint

Black Rock Viewpoint is for those willing to put in more effort.

What makes it different

This viewpoint requires a hike and is less developed. The reward is one of the most expansive and raw views in Phuket.

Important notes

• hiking required
• bring water
• not ideal in wet conditions

This is best for confident hikers and adventure seekers.

Panwa Viewpoint

Panwa Viewpoint is less visited and offers views toward the quieter eastern side of Phuket.

Why it is worth visiting

• peaceful
• minimal crowds
• unique east-facing views

This is ideal if you want something different from the west coast scenery.

Best Time of Day for Viewpoints

Phuket viewpoints can be enjoyed throughout the day, but timing matters.

Morning

• cooler temperatures
• clearer skies
• fewer crowds

Afternoon

• warmer
• haze may reduce visibility

Late afternoon

• beautiful lighting
• more visitors

If photography matters, early mornings often deliver the best clarity.

How to Visit Phuket’s Viewpoints

Most viewpoints in Phuket are easy to visit and do not require long hikes or special tours.

Many travelers explore the island’s viewpoints by renting a scooter or hiring a taxi for the day. Because the viewpoints are spread across the island, they are often combined with other stops such as beaches, temples, or scenic drives.

For example, visitors might explore Phuket Old Town in the morning, stop at viewpoints like Karon Viewpoint in the afternoon, and end the day watching the sunset at Promthep Cape.

If you are planning several days on the island, my 5–7 Days in Phuket itinerary shows how to include viewpoints along with beaches, markets, and island tours.

Tips Before Visiting Phuket Viewpoints

• bring water
• wear sunscreen
• wear shoes with grip
• check weather conditions
• avoid viewpoints during heavy rain

Safety matters, especially near cliff edges.

How to Add Viewpoints to Your Itinerary

Viewpoints work well when paired with:
• beach visits
• café stops
• temples
• short drives

They are easy to add without needing a full day.

Planning Your Phuket Trip

Viewpoints are just one part of exploring Phuket. Many travelers also spend time visiting beaches, exploring historic areas, and taking island tours.

Some of the most popular activities include visiting Phuket Old Town, relaxing at Patong Beach, or taking boat trips to places like the Phi Phi Islands and James Bond Island.

If you are planning a longer trip, you can also see how Phuket fits into a bigger route in my 3 weeks in Thailand itinerary.
